Liz working in the basement studio
As a graduate of, and teaching assistant at, The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in Fredericton, New Brunswick, I have spent the past few years exploring different styles and perfecting various techniques. My style ranges from clean smooth and simple to rustic and natural. I love simplicity in form, color and am drawn to sleek object and a clean white silky smooth surface
I combine this contemporary look with bright colors, complex patterns and textures by using simple form and creamy white glazes with contrasting spots of bold color and texture. The surfaces with bright color and touches of textures are derived from indigenous textile and sgraffito patterns. Over time designs have been added to include specific characters and images. This keep the pottery light-hearted and warm. I enjoy creating happy pottery that will brighten people's day as they use it.
A newer line that I have been working on has taken me towards a rough and naturalistic way of thinking. It began as sleek platters with leaf impressions pressed into the clay, clean edges and a silky and streaky green matt finish glaze. While the leaf impression and the green glaze remain the platters have evolved into a more natural yet sophisticated version using a combination of clean and rough edges as well as a sprinkle of wood ash. I am also making wall hangings of various sizes as well as tube vases and flower boxes.
Keep your eye out for new designs, products, and most recently new colors have been added to the creamy white porcelain line. The standard colors, blue, yellow, and green remain, and I have added black, cantelope and a dark teal.
I live in Nashwaak Bridge, New Brunswick with my husband, Ryan Thompson, and first born, Inka, our puppy. The newest addition to our family is "Raku" our bunny.
